Customer Case Study: Texas Instruments |

Dallas, Texas (2000 - 2001) TI built a new clean room facility, called DMOS-6, to manufacture the new 300mm wafer. The main DMOS-6 clean room is 120,000 sq./ft with four additional clean rooms branching from it, for a total of 152,000 sq./ft. DMOS-6 plans included a fully automated overhead wafer shuttle system to move large quantities of wafers through each process at multiple tooling stations. Such a plan would require all tools to be precisely aligned to each other and to the overhead shuttle system. BJ Haffly and Joe Harmon were contracted to use laser alignment to set up what has turned out to be the only laser-aligned clean room facility in the world.
After several meetings with TI engineers, and collaborating with Randy Bruce initially as a consultant, BJ and Joe designed fixtures to establish and maintain datum lines throughout the clean room. TI personnel fabricated 24 datum fixtures that we installed under the sub floor along both sides of the room. These datum line fixtures were a critical step in determining the position of the fixture mounting brackets for each row of tools. We then designed, laid out, and installed 94 fixture mounting brackets into the sub floor, each row of tools requiring 2 mounting brackets, which were used to laser align every tool installed in the clean room.
It took 8 weeks to install and align the fixture mounting brackets. These brackets were designed to mount under the sub floor so there would be no obstructions or safety hazards left above the floor after the tools were laser aligned. We then had TI personnel fabricate 4 matching portable, precision laser fixtures designed to lock in place on the mounting brackets to laser align the tools in each row.
In all, BJ and Joe were involved for 18 months laying out the tool footprints and laser aligning all the tools for the clean room, which totaled 310 tools. To this day, it is still the only fully laser-aligned clean room in the world allowing fast and accurate wafer changes with the overhead transfer system. The fixtures are still being used today whenever TI changes out a tool. |
