fixators for G&LThere are several key factors to take into consideration for machine tool foundations. Many times companies will simply bring a machine into their facility and set it up on their existing floors, only to find out later that the machine won't hold tolerance, or it drifts, depending on the soil/water level conditions. These issues could have been avoided by providing the correct foundation for the machine. Following are items that need to be taken into consideration.

weight

Weight of the machine

Probably the most important factor when determining the size and thickness of the foundation.

Height of the machine

Which will determine overhead clearance for cranes, existing piping and electrical runs, overhead sprinklers, etc. You may have to install the machine in a pit simply because of ceiling height.

Rigid Support

Applies to certain types of machine tools that are not inherently rigid, and therefore need a rigid support to maintain the prescribed accuracy.

Vibration control

What does the OEM recommend for vibration isolation?

Isolation: The desired natural frequency for the isolation system is usually established by the operating characteristics of the mounted equipment and the isolation required. Should the machine be isolated from existing machines or do the existing machines need the new machine to be isolated to prevent disturbing their functions?

Coolant control

Do you need the coolant to be contained in a pit? If so, there is a seepage issue that needs to be addressed. Or will the machine be mounted at floor level with a dike around the machine?

Chip conveyors

If your machine is to be in a pit, you need to ensure the chip conveyor has been taken into consideration during layout so your chip hopper will be located where needed. Ensure the width and depth of the chip conveyor trough are correct.

These are just some of the items to take into consideration. That's why it's important to have consultation from someone with over 35 years experience dealing with all the issues and concerns that arise when planning on installing a machine. Vic Rodriguez can help determine all that is required for the foundation for your particular situation and proper installation of your machine.
